Biography

Prof. Paul KS Chan is Clinical Professor of the Department of Microbiology at the Faculty of Medicine of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Honorary Consultant in Microbiology for the New Territories East Cluster Hospitals of the Hong Kong Hospital Authority.

Prof. Chan is a renowned clinical virologist with special interests in viral epidemiology, pathogenesis and oncogenesis. He has published eight book chapters and more than 500 research papers on clinical virology.

Prof. Chan gives imperative advice to the Hong Kong Government. He is the Chairman of the Scientific Committee on Vector-Borne Diseases, the National Verification Committee for Measles Elimination in Hong Kong, the Grant Review Board for the Health and Medical Research Fund. Professor Chan is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Virological Methods.

Research Interests

  1. Clinical virology: epidemiology, laboratory diagnosis, pathogenesis and vaccination of clinically important viruses including herpesviruses, respiratory and diarrheal viruses.
  2. Human papillomavirus: epidemiology, oncogenesis, genetic risk association, Asian variants, cancer screening, vaccination and development of targeted therapy.
  3. Emerging and re-emerging infections: SARS-CoV, influenza and arboviruses.
